Fasnacht is the biggest carnival in Switzerland which takes place every year between the months of February and March in Basel. Carnival has also been listed as one of the fifty most famous local festival in Europe. 

As reported by CNN, Fasnacht celebrated with various events such as street parades, costume parties and carousing till dawn. Carnival is also often called the Basel carnival usually starts at 4 am on Monday. 

At that time, the entire city fell into darkness. The drummer and blowing bagpipes began to play medieval songs and marched around the city, which is only guided by handmade lanterns. The music will fill the entire city until dawn disappeared.


The lantern is characteristic of Fasnacht. When this unique celebration takes place, magnificent lanterns as high as 6 meters paraded around town. Each lantern can display a variety of themes such as political or social. 

Fasnacht is also known as the only Protestant carnival in the world. More than 200 lanterns will be on display under Protestant cathedral during Carnival. When walking among these lanterns, you may feel as if you're walking past an art museum open. 

In addition to lanterns, Fasnacht also has another surprise for those who watch the unique celebration, the attack confetti (pieces of paper). A unique costume that will catch the audience seeing the show on the road and then showered with confetti. After the party is over, the street sweeper can collect about 300 tons of bits of paper from the rest of the celebration.
